López wasn't the one they were watching. The cameras were on the winger, the one with the flick of the wrist and the roar that made the stands shudder. But the winger's freedom existed because López had just won the tackle, turned, and distributed without looking. No one would replay that moment. No one would print it in the morning paper.

He jogged back to his position, chest heaving, the grass staining his socks dark. The crowd's roar was for someone else. He didn't mind. He'd been here before, in smaller stadiums, in the rain, in the cold. He'd learned that the job was the job, and the job was done. He tapped his boot on the turf, reset his shoulders, and waited for the next ball to come to him.

Somewhere in the stands, his mother was clapping. That was enough.
