Born in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Vucetich is the son of José Antonio Vucetich Adler, an Argentine of Hungarian and Croatian descent. He began his managerial career in Mexico's Segunda División with Potros Neza, achieving promotion to the Primera División in 1988–89. He later led León back to the top flight and won his first league title with them in 1991–92. He won another title with Tecos UAG in 1993–94. Over three decades, he managed fourteen different Mexican clubs, winning five Primera División championships with four clubs. He also won one Copa México (with Monterrey in 2010–11) and two CONCACAF Champions League titles with Monterrey (2010–11 and 2011–12). He briefly managed the Mexico national team in 2013.
