Spring Trap

Invisible, patient, and utterly ruthless at turning ground pushes into aerial disasters.

The Spring Trap is a covert defensive building in Clash of Clans that sits invisible on the battlefield, waiting to ambush ground troops that wander too close. Rather than dealing direct damage, it hurls units skyward, leaving them helpless and exposed to air defenses, splash-damage towers, and aerial units for a brief, critical window. It is one of the few defenses that rewards a defender's patience and map-reading skill over raw firepower. Because the attacker can never see the Spring Trap on the map, it functions as a psychological and tactical wildcard. A well-placed cluster can turn a confident ground push into a chaotic scramble of airborne troops raining down in the wrong spot, making it a beloved pick for both casual and competitive base designers.

Lore & Background

In the sprawling, mud-splattered villages of the Clash of Clans world, defenders have long relied on walls, cannons, and archer towers to repel raiders. The Spring Trap represents a different philosophy: the belief that the best defense is the one your enemy never sees coming. Crafted by village engineers who studied how raiders commit their ground units in dense, confident columns, the trap is a coiled spring mechanism buried flush with the ground, camouflaged with grass and dirt so thoroughly that even a passing raider would stomp right over it.

When a troop steps within its small radius, the spring releases with a sharp metallic thwack, launching the unit several feet into the air. The launched troop is momentarily stunned and completely defenseless, drifting downward in a slow arc. In that brief window, air defenses, mortar fire, and splash-damage towers can carve through what was supposed to be a solid ground wall. The trap then re-coils silently, ready for its next victim, until its three charges are spent.

Village elders in the CoC world speak of the Spring Trap with a mix of pride and mild superstition. Some swear that a particularly well-hidden trap once launched an entire squad of Barbarians into a nearby lake, and the splash was visible from the Town Hall. Others insist the trap is simply a clever piece of engineering and nothing more. Either way, every defender who has ever watched a raider's ground push evaporate into a cloud of airborne, helpless troops knows the feeling: a quiet, satisfying thwack that says the battle is not yet over.

Reader's Guide

Purpose: The Spring Trap is a utility defense that does not deal damage. Instead, it launches ground troops into the air for a short duration, making them vulnerable to air defenses, splash-damage buildings (Mortar, Inferno Tower in multi-Giant mode, etc.), and aerial units. Its three uses per battle make it a finite resource to spend wisely. Max-level stats: At its highest level the trap retains its three uses per battle and its small trigger radius.

It deals no direct damage; its value is entirely in the vulnerability window it creates. Because it targets ground units only, it has no effect on air troops. Unlock and upgrades: The Spring Trap becomes available at a mid-tier Town Hall level (around TH 6). Upgrading it to higher levels costs gold and takes a moderate amount of time, with each level shortening the re-coil delay slightly so the trap can trigger again faster within a single battle.

Strategic note: Place Spring Traps in the open lanes where ground troops must funnel—between wall segments, in front of your core defenses, or just outside the outer wall where a committed push will step on them. Pair them with Mortars, Inferno Towers, and air defenses so the launched troops are punished the moment they hit the air. Avoid clustering all three in one spot; spreading them across two or three choke points covers more of the map and makes it harder for the attacker to predict where the next thwack will land. In a two-layer base, put one trap in the outer ring and two guarding the inner core for maximum surprise value.
