Background
In the film, the third-year student Tomoya Okazaki helps Nagisa restart the Drama Club, and with a month left before the school festival she decides to perform a solo piece based on a dream she has had since childhood. During her performance Tomoya realises that it is the same dream of an illusionary world that he has had all his life, and at the end of the play he confesses his love to her. They later live together, and Nagisa dies giving birth to their daughter Ushio, leaving Tomoya in a depression that lasts five years while Nagisa's parents raise the girl.
In the climax his father, Naoyuki, asks Tomoya's friends to take him away on a retreat. At the station where they arrive, Akio and Sanae Furukawa are waiting with Ushio; when she runs to him and trips, Tomoya leaps forward to catch her, and he then sees Nagisa smiling under the Tree of Promises from his dream. The character designs were by Megumi Kadonosono, based on the original designs of Key's Itaru Hinoue, and the screenplay was by Makoto Nakamura.
