Homer in the Gloamin'
Gabby Hartnett's home run into the dusk at Wrigley Field.
The Homer in the Gloamin' is one of the most famous home runs in baseball folklore, hit by Gabby Hartnett of the Chicago Cubs against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on September 28, 1938, near the end of the 1938 season. With darkness falling and the score tied at five, player-manager Hartnett came to bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and, on an 0–2 count, homered off Mace Brown.

Background
The Pirates had led the National League for much of the season but came to Chicago late in September only one and a half games ahead; the Cubs won the first game of the series 2–1 behind Dizzy Dean. The phrase, a play on the song "Roamin' in the Gloamin'", may first have been written by Associated Press reporter Earl Hilligan.
