On May 6, 1998, in only his fifth career start, Cubs rookie Kerry Wood threw a one-hit, no-walk shutout against the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field, striking out 20. Some have called it the greatest single-game pitching performance in MLB history.

The game tied Roger Clemens's record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game and broke Bill Gullickson's single-game rookie record of 18 from 1980. It earned Wood the nickname "Kid K".
