Lore & Background
In the series Lyudmilla learns at the hospital in Pripyat that her husband is being taken to Moscow with other patients. She follows him there and stays with him as he declines, and she watches as he and other first responders are buried in graves sealed with concrete. In the fourth episode she gives birth to a baby who dies within four hours.
The storyline draws on her own words. In a 1996 interview she said that her baby took the whole radioactive shock. The series recreates her belief that her husband was radioactive and caused the death of their daughter.
Reader's Guide
That belief has been challenged. A medical responder, Alla Shapiro, said in 2019 that once the firefighter had been showered and was out of his contaminated clothing he would not have been dangerous to others.
Ignatenko told an interviewer in 2019 that she suffered harassment and criticism when the series aired. She said reporters hounded her at home in Kyiv, and that she was criticised for exposing her unborn daughter even though she had known nothing about radiation at the time. She said she had received a single phone call offering money after filming was finished and took it for a hoax. The producers reject this, saying that they were in contact with her before, during and after filming and that she never asked for her story to be left out.
