Pamukkale, whose Turkish name translates to "cotton castle," is a natural landmark in Denizli Province, southwestern Turkey. It lies in the Inner Aegean region, within the River Menderes valley, where the climate is temperate for most of the year. The site is renowned for the carbonate mineral deposits left behind by flowing thermal spring water. The travertine formation, upon which the ancient Greek city of Hierapolis was built, measures roughly 2,700 meters long, 600 meters wide, and 160 meters high. From the hills across the valley, it is visible from the town of Denizli, 20 kilometers away. The shimmering, snow-white limestone surface, shaped over millennia by calcite-rich springs, gives the site its name. Mineral-laden water drips slowly down the mountainside, collecting in and cascading over the terraces into pools below. In 1988, Pamukkale was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hierapolis.

The terraces are composed of travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by mineral water from 17 hot springs in the area, with temperatures ranging from 35°C to 100°C. Water from the spring is channeled 320 meters to the top of the terraces, where it deposits calcium carbonate over a section 60 to 70 meters long and 24 to 30 meters wide. When the supersaturated water reaches the surface, carbon dioxide degasses, and calcium carbonate is deposited as a soft gel that eventually crystallizes into travertine.

Historical records about the city’s origins are sparse, with no evidence of Hittite or Persian presence. During the Iron Age, the Phrygians built a temple, likely in the first half of the 7th century BC, originally used by citizens of nearby Laodicea and later forming the center of Hierapolis. In the Hellenistic period, Hierapolis was founded as a thermal spa early in the 2nd century BC under the Seleucid Empire. Antiochus the Great sent 2,000 Jewish families to Lydia and Phrygia from Babylon and Mesopotamia, later joined by others from Judea; the Jewish congregation in Hierapolis may have reached 50,000 by 62 BC. The city became a healing center where doctors used thermal springs for treatment. Bronze coins minted in the 2nd century BC bear the name Hieropolis, possibly referring to the original temple or to Hiera, wife of Telephus. The name later changed to Hierapolis, meaning "holy city."

In 133 BC, Attalus III bequeathed his kingdom to Rome, making Hierapolis part of the Roman province of Asia. A major earthquake destroyed the city in AD 17 under Emperor Tiberius. Through the Apostle Paul’s influence, a church was founded here while he was in Ephesus. The Apostle Philip spent his final years in Hierapolis, and a martyrium was said to have been built where he was crucified in AD 80; his daughters were reputed to be prophetesses in the region. During the 4th century, Christians filled Pluto’s Gate with stones, indicating Christianity’s dominance. Originally a see of Phrygia Pacatiana, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian raised the bishop of Hierapolis to metropolitan rank in 531. Roman baths were converted into a Christian basilica, and the city flourished as an important Christian center during the Byzantine period.

The museum houses artifacts from Hierapolis, as well as from Laodiceia, Colossae, Tripolis, Attuda, and other towns of the Lycos valley. A section is devoted to Bronze Age crafts from Beycesultan Hüyük, and artifacts from Caria, Pisidia, and Lydia are also displayed. The exhibition space occupies three vaulted halls of the Hierapolis Bath buildings and open-air areas on the eastern side, once used as a library and gymnasium. Open-air exhibits are mostly marble and stone.

Pamukkale is one of Turkey’s most visited natural sites, attracting over two million visitors annually. Tourists can bathe in designated thermal pools, including Cleopatra’s Pool, where ancient marble columns lie submerged. To protect the delicate travertine terraces, UNESCO and local authorities regulate water flow and periodically close sections to allow natural regeneration. These efforts aim to preserve the landscape for future generations while supporting sustainable tourism. The Hierapolis-Pamukkale site was made a World Heritage Site in 1988, drawing visitors for both its status and natural beauty.
