Work began in January 2006: an access road was built, the tunnel restored, and a dam constructed across the river where it enters the Salle de la Verna, creating a 200-cubic-meter reservoir. Over 3 kilometers of pressure pipe were installed across the chamber, through the tunnel, and down to the valley, where a hydroelectric plant was built. Close cooperation between SHEM, cavers, and local authorities led to the cave’s public opening. In June 2007, a local intercommunal syndicate (SIVU) confirmed the site’s operation by the Caving Associations of the Atlantic Pyrenees, who formed a small company to organize guided visits. La Verna opened to the public on July 1, 2010, and is now accessible to everyone, including those with reduced mobility.
