The species was first described scientifically as *Viverra civetta* by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776, based on earlier accounts. In 1915, Reginald Innes Pocock noted structural differences in the feet of African and large Indian civet specimens, leading him to propose the new genus *Civettictis* with *C. civetta* as its sole species. Several subspecies have been proposed over the 20th century: *C. c. congica* (from the upper Congo River, described by Ángel Cabrera in 1929); *C. c. schwarzi* (East Africa, also Cabrera, 1929); *C. c. australis* (near the Olifants River in northeastern Transvaal, described by Bengt G. Lundholm in 1955); *C. c. volkmanni* (near Otavi, Namibia, also Lundholm, 1955); and *C. c. pauli* (near the coast of Djibouti, described by Dieter Kock, Künzel, and Rayaleh in 2000). A 1969 study noted that the civet’s dentition differed enough from other viverrines to warrant its own genus.

A 2006 phylogenetic study found the African civet is closely related to the genus *Viverra*. It estimated that the *Civettictis*-*Viverra* lineage split from *Viverricula* about 16.2 million years ago, and that the African civet diverged from *Viverra* around 12.3 million years ago. The authors suggested splitting the subfamily Viverrinae into Genettinae (including *Poiana* and *Genetta*) and Viverrinae (including *Civettictis*, *Viverra*, and *Viverricula*).

The generic name *Civettictis* combines the French *civette* with the Greek *ictis* (meaning “weasel”). The specific name *civetta* and the common name “civet” come from the French *civette* or the Arabic *zabād* or *sinnawr al-zabād* (“civet cat”). In local languages, it is known as ዝባድ (zibad) in Tigrinya, *kankane* in Akan, *Ffumbe* or *Effumbe* in Luganda, *Ẹtà* or *àgútà* in Yoruba, and *Edi* in Igbo.

The African civet has coarse, wiry fur ranging from white to creamy yellow to reddish on the back, with deep brown to black stripes, spots, and blotches. Horizontal lines are prominent on the hind limbs, spots appear on the midsection, and vertical stripes occur above the forelimbs. Its muzzle is pointed, ears small and rounded, and a black band stretches across its small eyes, with two black bands around its short, broad neck. An erectile dorsal crest runs from the neck to the base of the tail, with longer hairs than the rest of the coat. The skull has a well-developed sagittal crest for attachment of the temporal muscle, and a robust zygomatic arch for the masseter muscle, giving it a powerful bite. Its dental formula is 3.1.4.2/3.1.4.2. The paws are black, compact, and hairless on the soles, with five digits per forepaw (the first toe slightly set back) and long, curved, semi-retractile claws. Head-and-body length is 67–84 cm (26–33 in), tail length 34–47 cm (13–19 in), and weight averages 11–15 kg (24–33 lb), ranging from 7 to 20 kg (15–44 lb). It is the largest viverrid in Africa; only the binturong may be heavier among world viverrids. Shoulder height averages 40 cm (16 in). Both sexes have perineal and anal glands, larger in males; in males, the perineal glands lie between the scrotum and penis, and in females between the anus and vulva.

African civets typically sleep during the day in tall grasses near water sources in central and southern Africa, often inhabiting savannahs, forests, and areas near rivers where tall grasses and thickets provide cover. In Guinea’s National Park of Upper Niger, it was recorded during surveys from 1996 to 1997. In Gabon’s Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, it was photographed near forested areas in 2012. In Batéké Plateau National Park, it was recorded in gallery forest along the Mpassa River between June 2014 and May 2015. In the Republic of Congo, it was recorded in the Western Congolian forest–savanna mosaic of Odzala-Kokoua National Park during surveys in 2007.
