Guardians of the Clow Cards

Background

Cerberus guards the book that holds the cards. After Sakura accidentally releases them he chooses her as the candidate and teaches her the basics of capturing them; he usually appears in a small winged false form resembling an orange stuffed animal, and his powers, like the sun, are largely self-sustaining, though his true form, a large winged mountain lion, needs his master to control the Firey and Earthy cards. Yue, whose name is the Mandarin word for moon, spends most of the series as Yukito Tsukishiro, who at first knows nothing of his other self.

Yue's powers depend heavily on his master's, and after Sakura becomes master her magic is not yet strong enough to sustain him until her brother Touya gives Yue his own power. Yue has jurisdiction over the wind and water cards and those tied to the moon, such as Wood, Time and Dark. Serious and aloof, he is reluctant to accept Sakura but comes to respond to her wish to be his friend rather than his master. Eriol Hiiragizawa later creates his own counterpart pair, Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun.
