Lore & Background

The Sabres have twice advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975 and to the Dallas Stars in 1999. The Sabres, along with the Canucks, are the oldest active NHL franchises to have never won the Stanley Cup. The Sabres held the NHL record longest playoff drought in the NHL at 14 seasons, which occurred between the 2010–11 and 2025–26 seasons.

In Their Own Story

The arena lights hummed over the ice at First Niagara Center as the final seconds ticked away in Game 7. The crowd, a sea of blue and gold, held its breath, knowing that one mistake would mean another year of waiting. A loose puck skittered near the crease, but the goalie made the save only to see the rebound fall into an opponent's stick. The horn sounded, not with triumph, but with the heavy silence of a dream deferred once again.

Reader's Guide

The team's early years featured the French Connection line of Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, and Rene Robert. Perreault was the team's first draft pick in 1970, won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, and all three players have had their jersey numbers retired. The Sabres' first Stanley Cup Final appearance came in 1975, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers. The team's second Final appearance was in 1999, losing to the Dallas Stars.
