Playing career
Kevin Roy got his start in competitive hockey at the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, where he played for a minor ice hockey team out of Saint-Laurent. He later went to Northeastern University and joined the Huskies men’s ice hockey team starting in the 2012–13 season. As a freshman, he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. The next year, he made the Hockey East Second All-Star Team, and as a junior, he earned a spot on the First All-Star Team. In his first Beanpot Tournament game in 2013, he scored a hat trick. His brother, Derick Roy, also played goalie for Northeastern.
Roy signed his first pro contract on April 8, 2016, a two-year entry-level deal with the Anaheim Ducks. During the 2017–18 season, the Ducks called him up from their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, and he made his NHL debut on November 9, 2017, against the Vancouver Canucks. He scored his first NHL goal on November 15, 2017, against the Boston Bruins. After leaving Anaheim as a free agent, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers on July 4, 2019. He started the 2019–20 season with the Panthers’ AHL team, the Springfield Thunderbirds, putting up 14 points in 23 games. On December 18, 2019, Florida traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Ryan Haggerty. He finished the season with Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, scoring 10 goals and 21 points in 35 games before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a free agent, Roy accepted a professional tryout invite to the Tucson Roadrunners’ AHL training camp on January 19, 2021. In that shortened season, he led the Roadrunners in scoring with 11 goals and 30 points in 35 games. On September 17, 2021, after leaving Tucson as a free agent, he signed a one-year deal with the Laval Rocket, the Montreal Canadiens’ top AHL affiliate.
