Graham Potter

Graham Stephen Potter (born 20 May 1975) is an English football manager and former player, currently in charge of the Sweden national team.

As a left-back, Potter played 307 Football League matches over 13 years, with a Premier League stint at Southampton and a spell in the Football Conference with Shrewsbury Town. He earned one cap for England’s under-21 side.

His managerial career began in January 2011 at Swedish club Östersund, where he secured three promotions and a Svenska Cupen title, guiding the team to the knockout stage of the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League. He moved to Championship side Swansea City in June 2018, then to Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion a year later. After strong results at Brighton, Chelsea hired him in 2022, but he was sacked in April 2023 following a sharp decline in performance. He managed West Ham United from January to September 2025.

In October 2025, Potter became head coach of Sweden, winning UEFA playoffs to qualify the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Potter was born in Solihull, West Midlands. He began as a trainee at Birmingham City at 17, had a loan at Wycombe Wanderers, then moved to Stoke City and later Southampton, where he featured in the famous 6–3 win over Manchester United in 1996. While at Southampton, he played for England U21s against Moldova in a European Championship qualifier. He joined West Bromwich Albion in 1997, spent three and a half years there with loans at Northampton Town and Reading, then signed for York City. After over 100 appearances for York, he moved to Boston United in summer 2003, went on loan to Shrewsbury Town in November 2003, and finished his playing career at Macclesfield Town in 2004 on a free transfer.

With support from the Professional Footballers’ Association, Potter earned a Social Sciences degree from the Open University in December 2005. He worked as a football development manager at the University of Hull and as technical director for Ghana’s women’s team at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He became assistant coach for the England Universities squad, then took a similar role at Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett University), completing an MSc in Leadership focusing on emotional intelligence.

In 2008, he managed Northern Counties East League Division One side Leeds Carnegie, leading them to the FA Vase third round and third place in the 2009–10 season before leaving on 12 January 2011.

In December 2010, Potter signed a three-year contract with Östersund, then in Sweden’s fourth tier, starting 24 January 2011. He got the job after his friend Graeme Jones, assistant to Roberto Martínez at Swansea, recommended him to chairman Daniel Kindberg following a friendly between Östersund and Swansea. After two promotions, he extended his contract in 2013. On 27 October 2015, Östersund secured promotion to the Allsvenskan for the first time, finishing second in the Superettan.

Their debut top-flight season ended in eighth place, praised for a slick passing game on a limited budget. On 13 April 2017, they won the Svenska Cupen 4–1 over Norrköping, earning a spot in the 2017–18 Europa League second qualifying round. They beat Galatasaray 3–1 on aggregate, Fola Esch 3–1, and PAOK on away goals after a 3–3 aggregate draw, reaching the group stage. They finished second in their group, level on points with Athletic Bilbao, and beat Arsenal 2–1 at the Emirates but lost 4–2 on aggregate. Östersund finished fifth in the league.

Potter became Swansea City manager on 11 June 2018 on a three-year deal, joined by assistant Billy Reid and analyst Kyle Macaulay. He said the club, recently relegated from the Premier League, wanted to return with an identity. His first win was 2–1 over Sheffield United, with goals from Oli McBurnie and Yan Dhanda; his first home game was a 1–0 win against Preston. In the 2018–19 FA Cup quarter-finals, Swansea led Manchester City 2–0 before losing 3–2. They finished 10th in the Championship, with a late run giving them a slim play-off chance entering the final three matches.
