Steve Gatting

Stephen Paul Gatting (born 29 May 1959) is an English former professional footballer who played centre half or central midfield. He is best known for appearing for Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1983 FA Cup Final. His most recent role was as a youth team coach at Arsenal.

Gatting began his career at Arsenal, joining as an apprentice in July 1975 and turning professional in 1977. He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a 3–0 UEFA Cup win over Lokomotiv Leipzig on 13 September 1978. He quickly became a regular, making 30 appearances in the 1978–79 season. Although he missed the 1979 FA Cup Final win over Manchester United, he contributed six appearances on the way to the final—five in a third-round tie against Sheffield Wednesday that required four replays (Gatting scored in the decisive replay) and one in the semi-final against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After retiring as a player, Gatting coached for seven years at Christ's Hospital school. In 2007 he became Arsenal's under-23s coach, but was suspended in May 2018 alongside assistant Carl Laraman over bullying allegations and later released. He was also a capable cricketer, making several appearances for Middlesex's second eleven.

Gatting's brother is former England cricketer Mike Gatting. His son Joe Gatting played 44 games as a footballer for Brighton & Hove Albion before switching to cricket for Sussex and Hampshire.
