Personal life

Russell Martin grew up in Brighton, East Sussex, with parents Dean and Kerry, two older brothers Jamie and David, and a younger brother Pepe, who was also fostered by the family. His father worked as a taxi driver, was abusive to Martin's mother, and spent time in prison; his gambling addiction cost the family their home in Hollingbury, forcing a move to Hollingdean. Despite this, his father coached his son's football teams. Martin attended Varndean School and Varndean College, earning A-Levels in history, PE, and drama.

Before turning professional with Wycombe, he cleaned pub toilets before school and worked evenings at a Spar. He set up the Russell Martin Foundation in Brighton, originally a football academy, aiming to change lives through football, education, and health programs. A vegan since 2014 to manage ulcerative colitis, he was also a part-owner of the vegan restaurant Erpingham House. In a 2018 interview, he said he had joined the Green Party, and he follows Buddhism.

In July 2024, the University of Brighton awarded him an honorary degree for his charity work. In February 2026, he married former glamour model Lucy Pinder.

Club career

Martin joined Brighton & Hove Albion's youth academy and left in early 2004 to join Lewes. He then had trials with several clubs, including Charlton Athletic. He joined Wycombe Wanderers in 2004, making his debut in a 2–1 home victory over Cambridge United on 7 August 2004. He signed a new two-year contract ahead of the 2006–07 season and played in the League Two play-off semi-final against Stockport County, which Wycombe lost 2–1 on aggregate.

On 29 May 2008 he moved to Peterborough United on a three-year contract, becoming the club's youngest ever captain and captaining them to promotion to the Championship. After joining Norwich City on loan, his transfer was made permanent on 4 January 2010. He scored his first goal for Norwich in a 3–1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers on 14 September 2010. He scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on 1 January 2011 and a last-minute equaliser against Cardiff City, earning the nickname 'the Cafu of the Championship'.

He signed new three-year deals in June 2012 and July 2013, and was named club captain on 10 August 2013. He later had brief spells with Rangers, Walsall and Milton Keynes Dons.

Managerial career

On 3 November 2019, Martin was announced as permanent first-team manager of League One club Milton Keynes Dons. The club finished 19th in the 2019–20 season, which ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Martin and assistant Luke Williams installed a possession-based style that received widespread plaudits; on 2 March 2021 his team scored after a 56-pass move, a new British record. In the 2020–21 season, only Manchester City and Barcelona had a higher average possession percentage in Europe than MK Dons, and the team had the most touches in the opposition box in League One, finishing 13th.

On 1 August 2021 he became head coach of Swansea City on a three-year contract. His first league win came on 20 August against Bristol City. In October he led Swansea to a 3–0 win against rivals Cardiff City, and later a 4–0 win in the reverse fixture made Swansea the first team to complete the league double in the derby's 110-year history. Swansea finished 15th in his first season and 10th the following season.

In June 2025 he was appointed head coach of Rangers but was dismissed four months later. He became manager of Leicester City in June 2026.

Managerial style

Russell Martin started working on his coaching badges when he was 22, later earning his UEFA Pro Licence through the Scottish FA in 2019. His managerial approach draws from Chris Hughton, Daniel Farke, and Pep Guardiola, with a clear preference for keeping the ball. He sets his teams up in formations like 3-4-2-1, 3-5-2, 4-1-2-1-2, or 4-3-3, focusing on passing and pressing. When results go badly, he sticks with his style and tries to refine the plan instead. Martin believes that controlling possession lets his side dictate the game and wear down opponents.
