Lore & Background
Marie was born Marie Lambert and lives with Hank in Albuquerque. When Walt reveals his lung cancer diagnosis, she helps organize an oncology team but sides with him when he initially refuses treatment. She presents Skyler with a stolen white gold baby tiara at a shower, leading to a confrontation where Skyler realizes the theft; Marie denies it calmly. Later, after Skyler confronts her about scheduling therapy conflicts, Hank learns of Marie's therapy for unspecified problems.
Both sisters eventually realize the other knows about the kleptomania. During Hank's recovery from being shot by The Cousins and left with PTSD, Marie supports him emotionally and financially when their insurance falls short, accepting Walt and Skyler's lie that they are wealthy gamblers to pay the bills. As Hank becomes bitter and obsessed with mineral collecting, Marie resumes stealing items like a souvenir spoon from real estate open houses until caught; Hank pulls strings to avoid charges for her.
After Hank discovers Walt is a drug kingpin, Marie confronts Skyler, slaps her for hiding the truth, and demands Walt be arrested. She helps Hank attempt to stop Walt, but their efforts are ultimately undone when Jack Welker's gang acquires Hank's confession video. Following Hank's death at the hands of Jack Welker, Marie is initially unaware, reconciling with Skyler on the condition she tells Walter Jr. everything. She later learns Hank is dead after Walt kidnaps Holly.
Her house is raided by Jack's gang, leading to her placement in a safe house. Two months after Walt's death, Marie reunites with Skyler and they share a moment of closure.
Reader's Guide
Marie Schrader is introduced as a radiologic technologist living with DEA agent husband Hank in Albuquerque. She struggles with compulsive shoplifting (kleptomania), often stealing items like baby tiaras and souvenir spoons, which leads to therapy and conflict with Skyler. Her loyalty shifts when she learns of Walt's criminal activities; she slaps Skyler for hiding the truth and pushes Hank to arrest Walt. After Hank is shot by The Cousins and later killed by Jack Welker, Marie supports his recovery and eventually testifies against Saul Goodman. She wears purple almost exclusively throughout the series, a color creator Vince Gilligan noted symbolizes her being misled; in the finale, she wears black-and-white to symbolize grief.
