Background
Tuco Salamanca operates out of a remote desert hideout where he cares for his uncle, Hector Salamanca. Hector is incapacitated from the neck down and unable to speak, communicating only through a desk bell attached to his wheelchair. Tuco believes the DEA has dismantled his entire organization and that his associate Gonzo has ratted him out, unaware that Gonzo is actually dead. Driven by this paranoia, Tuco plans to keep Walt and Jesse captive until his cousins arrive at sunset to take them across the border to Mexico for 24/7 meth production. His status as a loose cannon is evident in how he treats potential witnesses, holding a gun to Jesse's head and forcing Walt to confess after suspecting a poisoning attempt.
