History
ITV decided to replace GMTV with Daybreak after fully taking over the channel. The weekday breakfast lineup on ITV consisted of Daybreak and Lorraine, while weekends were given over to children's shows. A promotional push for the new programme kicked off on 23 August, using short clips aired during commercial breaks in ITV’s evening schedule. The first episode aired on 6 September 2010, hosted by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, who had spent nearly three years co-presenting BBC One’s The One Show before moving to ITV. They showed off the new set and took in the view from the window. That debut featured an interview with Tony Blair and a main report from John Stapleton about the 2006 collapse of the Farepak Christmas savings club. The programme also included footage from various UK locations and a tour of the studio. Critics gave the first show a mixed response. In March 2011, ITV said it would fold Daybreak into its ITV News division as part of a management shake-up. By July, production of Daybreak and Lorraine had been handed to ITV Studios. In August, This Morning executive Karl Newton was put in charge of moving the show to ITV Studios and giving it a major overhaul, described as a final attempt to improve its ratings. Daybreak marked its first anniversary on 6 September, and two days later deputy editor Paul Connolly left. On 12 December 2011, reports said Daybreak would refocus on 'hassled mums' and introduce a new presenting team around April 2012, though those plans were postponed. On 26 April, it was reported that the show would be relocated to the studio Lorraine used.
Format
Daybreak was a morning programme that mixed news with lifestyle and entertainment segments, featuring celebrity chats, consumer advice, health stories, and reports filmed across the UK. The first hour, from 6 am, was called the Daybreak News-Hour and was hosted by Matt Barbet and Ranvir Singh, who also talked to guests and went through the day’s newspaper front pages. John Stapleton, Helen Fospero, or Louisa James would fill in as stand-in hosts for that part. From 7 am to 8:30 am, Aled Jones and Lorraine Kelly took over, concentrating on human interest pieces, showbiz news, and lifestyle topics. News, sport, and weather updates came from Ranvir Singh and Laura Tobin, supported by a team of correspondents and experts. Stand-in presenters for this section included Kate Garraway, Matt Barbet, or John Stapleton, with Barbet sometimes hosting the entire 6 am to 8:30 am slot; Helen Fospero also occasionally stood in. News bulletins were delivered by Ranvir Singh from the Daybreak News-Desk at 7 am and 8 am, with headline summaries at 7:30 am and again at 9 am on the sister show Lorraine, and reports were filed by the news team. Between September 2012 and summer 2013, two guests regularly discussed the main front-page headlines and inside articles, though this later became less frequent; Matt Barbet always showed the front pages. Occasional newspaper reviewers included Victoria Derbyshire, Kevin Maguire, Martel Maxwell, and Michael Portillo, who often appeared on Lorraine at 8:35 am. Laura Tobin presented the national weather forecast at roughly 6:08 am, 6:25 am, 6:55 am, 7:25 am, 7:55 am, and 8:25 am. In December 2010, the programme gave extensive coverage to severe winter weather, using a news ticker for transport updates during blizzards. Some forecasts were filmed from outdoor locations like Leeds Castle or Epsom Downs Racecourse.
