Format

The magazine-style show begins with headline updates at the start and at the top of each hour, followed by three three-minute regional bulletins at quarter past the hour covering news, travel advisories, and weather. Since 6 January 2020, the first half-hour features Hawkins, Garraway or Singh reading headlines, joined at 6:30 am by two main anchors; this format was suspended during the early COVID-19 pandemic but returned on 31 August 2020. The programme includes celebrity and political interviews and discussions of topical issues, often featuring heated debates. Viewers engage via Facebook and Twitter, and regular competitions are presented by Andi Peters. Weather is presented by Laura Tobin, entertainment by Richard Arnold, and health by Dr Hilary Jones.

History

A programme of the same name aired as part of TV-am between 1983 and 1992 each weekday from 7:00 am to 9:00 am, alongside a Saturday edition. Good Morning Britain launched on 28 April 2014 after Daybreak was cancelled, with four main presenters: Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher. Laura Tobin presented weather, Richard Arnold delivered entertainment news, and Fletcher handled sports. Erron Gordon directed from 2014 to 2021, succeeded by Stuart Earl. Reid, Shephard and Hawkins presented four days a week, Fletcher daily; when Reid was absent, Hawkins substituted, with Garraway or Singh filling in. From 13 June to 11 July 2014, the show covered the FIFA World Cup with Fletcher presenting from Brazil. On 19 September 2014, it extended to 10:00 am for the Scottish independence referendum, with Reid and Shephard in Edinburgh. On 24 July 2015, it was broadcast live from Buckingham Palace by Shephard, Garraway and Tobin. On 13 October 2015, ITV announced Piers Morgan would join three days a week after a guest stint. On 22 March 2016, the show extended to 10:30 am for the Brussels bombings, cancelling Lorraine and The Jeremy Kyle Show; Reid reported from Brussels the next day. On 25 March 2016, a fire in an ITV office forced evacuation, with a standby tape and Dinner Date replacing the programme for its first 30 minutes. On 24 June 2016, it extended to 9:25 am for the EU referendum result. On 22 July 2016, a second royal special aired from Buckingham Palace with Garraway and Singh, and Tobin presented weather from the Palace Gardens.

Studio

Good Morning Britain originally broadcast from Studio 5 at The London Studios, the same studio used by GMTV. In February 2017, ITV announced the closure of The London Studios for rebuilding, and that its daytime shows would move to BBC Studioworks' Television Centre. The last programme from The London Studios aired on 13 April 2018. On 16 April 2018, the daytime shows moved to Television Centre, with Good Morning Britain using Studio TC3, a 6390 sqft studio split between Good Morning Britain and This Morning, sharing cameras and gallery. In October 2018, ITV confirmed it would not return to the South Bank. From 5 January 2026, Good Morning Britain will be produced by ITN under the ITV News banner, as part of a renewed agreement for ITN to produce national, international, London and digital news for ITV. The programme will broadcast from Studio 1 at ITN's Central London headquarters on Gray's Inn Road, shared with ITV News bulletins and ITV News London. It will also extend to run from 6:00 am to 10:00 am daily for 22 weeks of the year, and 6:00 am to 9:30 am for 30 weeks, continuing on ITVX after broadcast.

Reception

Good Morning Britain goes up against BBC Breakfast, Sky News Breakfast, and GB News Breakfast in the early morning slot. In 2015, the show earned three TRIC Award nominations, and Susanna Reid took home the Newscaster of the Year prize. That same year, Newscast Studio gave the programme’s set the title of Best International Set of the Year. The following year, it was up for Best Daytime TV Programme at the TV Choice Awards but didn’t win. Also in 2016, it shared the PinkNews Broadcaster of the Year Award with Victoria Derbyshire. The programme was nominated for a National Television Award in 2018 but missed the shortlist; it did make the shortlist in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Presenters Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard each received nominations for Best Presenter at the National Television Awards in 2019, 2020, and 2021, but neither made the shortlist in 2019 or 2020. However, six months after leaving the show, Morgan was shortlisted for the award, ultimately losing to Ant & Dec. In 2019, Good Morning Britain picked up two BAFTA TV nominations for Best News Coverage—one for its knife crime interview and another for the exclusive Thomas Markle interview—but didn’t win. On 18 June 2019, the programme won the Golden Nymph for Best Live Breaking News at the 59th Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
