Format
Each day the presenter introduces the upcoming show and discusses main stories from the morning's newspapers, sometimes replaced by a Los Angeles update from Ross King. The first guests are interviewed next, followed by more guests and regulars such as Mark Heyes and Dr. Hilary Jones for fashion and health slots. The competition from Good Morning Britain also appears throughout the programme. Attitude magazine noted that Lorraine has provided a platform for LGBT people to share their stories, earning Kelly the Hono Gay Award at the 2015 Attitude Awards, and described the series as "quite gay every day."
History
The first edition aired on 6 September 2010, following a preview on Daybreak that revealed a spacious studio with pastel hues and pink decorative motifs, including a pink sofa arranged in a semicircle around a central internally lit coffee table. The first guest was actress Gemma Arterton, and the programme also featured an interview with Sky News reporter Sarah Parish, a recipe by TV chef James Tanner, and newspaper reviews by Celia Walden and Kevin Maguire. On 20 October 2014, the show was taken off air after a fire alarm forced evacuation of the studio on London's South Bank at 9:10 am, just as Kelly was about to interview eliminated X Factor contestant Stephanie Nala from Luminites. The last 15 minutes were replaced by an episode of The National Trust, followed by The Jeremy Kyle Show. In February 2016, Lorraine's Top Tales launched as a competition to find new children's authors, with judges Nadiya Hussain and Tom Fletcher. In April 2018, along with the rest of ITV Breakfast, Lorraine began broadcasting from BBC Studioworks' Television Centre due to the proposed redevelopment of The London Studios; in October 2018, ITV announced it would not return to the South Bank. On 6 January 2020, the show moved to a new time slot from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, with Good Morning Britain and This Morning both extended by 30 minutes. Production was suspended from 23 March to 10 July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which Good Morning Britain was extended to 10 am, with the final hour presented by Kelly and titled Good Morning Britain with Lorraine. This caused the programme's run-time to cross the 9:25 a.m. end of the official ITV Breakfast slot, so viewers in most of Scotland saw ITV1 branding for the first 25 minutes and STV branding for the remainder.
Crossovers
On ITV's earlier breakfast programme Daybreak, a sneak peek of the day's Lorraine episode was shown each morning around 7:30, featuring a conversation between the two shows' presenters. This preview originally aired at 8:15 but was shifted to an earlier time in March 2011. On 30 November 2010, Daybreak co-host Adrian Chiles donned a kilt and appeared on-screen in the Lorraine studio to wish Lorraine Kelly a happy birthday and celebrate St Andrew's Day. Due to technical issues on 20 July 2011, Lorraine was broadcast from the Daybreak studio. When Daybreak concluded on 25 April 2014, its successor Good Morning Britain launched the following Monday, 28 April 2014, and Lorraine now airs after GMB. A preview of Lorraine is included on GMB at 8:15, following the regional news opt-out. From March to July 2020, because Lorraine's own show was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, she hosted the final hour of GMB (9:00–10:00), which was retitled GMB with Lorraine.
