Reader's Guide

Brazil's most notable rivalries are with Argentina, Italy, and Uruguay. The team's first-ever game was a 1914 match against English club Exeter City, winning 2–0. Brazil achieved third place at the first two editions of the South American Championship (1916 and 1917) and won their first title in 1919. After a 27-year drought, they won the 1949 South American Championship. The 1950 World Cup defeat to Uruguay, known as the Maracanazo, led to national mourning and the end of the white uniform. Brazil debuted their current yellow and blue uniform at the 1954 World Cup.
