Background
Jim Lonborg started on two days' rest against Gibson; the Cardinals had been angered by Dick Williams' quip "Lonborg and Champagne". St. Louis led 2–0 in the third, Gibson homered in the fifth, Lou Brock stole his seventh base of the Series, a new record, and Julián Javier's three-run homer in the sixth ended Lonborg's night. Gibson struck out 10 and allowed two runs. It was the Cardinals' second title of the 1960s and eighth overall.
