Background
Boston scored first on Dom DiMaggio's sacrifice fly; the Cardinals tied it in the second and took a 3–1 lead in the fifth. DiMaggio tied the game with a two-run double in the eighth but pulled a hamstring and was replaced in center field by Leon Culberson. In the bottom of the inning Walker lined the ball to left-center, Culberson was slow to field it, and Slaughter ran through third base coach Mike González's stop sign as Johnny Pesky took the relay. Harry Brecheen won his third game of the Series.
