Background
In 2099 Los Angeles, after an uprising, Replicants are the power brokers of the city while humans have become second-class citizens. Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner nearing the end of her life, played by Michelle Yeoh, unites with her partner Cora, a human pretending to be a Replicant, played by Hunter Schafer, to hunt a gang of rogue Replicants. Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben are series regulars, with Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi among the recurring cast.
In November 2021 Ridley Scott announced that a pilot and a series bible had been written with initial plans for 10 episodes; the title was revealed in February 2022, Luisa joined as showrunner, and Amazon ordered the miniseries in September 2022. Jeremy Podeswa was hired to direct the pilot but exited over scheduling, and Jonathan Van Tulleken took over the first two episodes. Filming was due to begin in Belfast but was postponed by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, after which production left Northern Ireland and moved to Prague in May 2024, shooting mainly at Barrandov Studios with additional filming in Barcelona until late December 2024. Luisa has described the look as "sunshine noir" rather than the rainy neon of Scott's original.
