Lore & Background

Liam's existence is defined by the 'grain,' an implant the size of a grain of rice that records his audiovisual senses. He attends a performance appraisal, agonizing over it by repeatedly watching a 're-do' on his grain. At a dinner party for Ffion and her friends, he fixates on Jonas, whose engagement recently ended. When Jonas jokes about masturbating to re-dos of past sex, the guests react negatively, but Liam only digs deeper.

He invites Jonas home, then exaggerates remembering how late it is to force Jonas out. Later, he interrogates Ffion about her time with Jonas in Marrakesh; she claims a one-month relationship, but Liam produces a memory where she said it lasted a week. The conflict escalates when Ffion references Liam's past obsession with another man named Dan. They reconcile and have sex while watching memories of their past encounters, yet Liam immediately returns to drinking and re-watching the dinner party footage.

Reader's Guide

Liam serves as the emotional core of 'The Entire History of You,' portrayed by Toby Kebbell. The character was designed for a near-future setting in 2050, utilizing materials like stone, wood, and metal to ground the sci-fi concept. Director Brian Welsh focused heavily on Kebbell's performance, encouraging improvisation and different intonations between takes so neither actor knew how the other would react. The production team initially worried Liam appeared too unlikable in certain take combinations, altering the final edit to highlight a funnier side of his character before his descent into obsession.

The memory technology allows for specific features like zooming, speed alteration, and lip reading analysis. In one key scene, originally conceived as characters watching TV footage, they instead watch replays directly in their pupils, creating a 'milked out' visual effect described by creator Charlie Brooker as 'downright haunting.' The episode was written by Jesse Armstrong, the only Black Mirror episode not co-written by Charlie Brooker, who pitched it as an exploration of relationships and the importance of forgetting.
