The Circus
Behind the painted smiles lies a sinister truth waiting to be exposed.
Noah's Ark Circus is a travelling circus in Black Butler created by Baron Kelvin, whom its first-string performers call "Father". Kelvin had an obsession with children and used the circus as a way to kidnap them. The manga's "Noah's Ark Circus" arc was adapted as the 2014 anime series Black Butler: Book of Circus.
Lore & Background
Its first-string members are the ringleader Joker, the animal trainer Beast, the knife thrower Dagger, the trapeze artists Peter and Wendy, the fire eater Jumbo, the tightrope walker Doll and Snake, its snake/human hybrid and latest member. Most of them grew up in an alley in London's East End until Baron Kelvin took them in at his manor, and several wear prosthetic limbs made by the circus's Doctor from a special bone china made from the bones of the kidnapped children, which Joker did not know. Ciel and Sebastian infiltrated the circus under the stage names Smile and Black.
Reader's Guide
Ciel killed Baron Kelvin and ordered Sebastian to burn his mansion; Joker died defending Kelvin, and the Doctor was killed by Sebastian under Ciel's orders. Beast, Dagger, Peter, Wendy and Jumbo were killed by the Phantomhive servants Baldroy, Mey-Rin and Finnian when they invaded the Phantomhive manor to kidnap Ciel. Snake later joined the Phantomhive household as its footman, and Doll was turned into a Bizarre Doll.
