Lore & Background
The Skopje brewery was founded in 1922 and began operations in 1924. Skopsko was originally introduced as "Light Beer" with a 10% extract. Before World War II, the name changed to "An Export Beer from Skopje" ("Скопљанско Експортно Пиво") with an increased extract of 12%. By the early 1990s, the name "Skopsko" was placed in the center of the label. In 1991, Skopsko was rebranded. In 1996, "Brewery Skopje" was added to the label. New labels appeared in 1999 and 2004, and new packaging in 2005. In December 2014, production of dark beer started. In 1998, the brewery was purchased by the Greek Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Heineken.
Reader's Guide
Skopsko's significance lies in its dominance of the North Macedonian beer market, where it commands a 64% share. As the first commercial beer in the country, it established the brewing tradition and remains the best-known and best-selling brand. Its slogans have evolved from "Best of Macedonia" to "Our Best" and "Skopsko, and everything is possible." The beer is brewed with water, malted barley, and hops, producing a golden yellow color with white foam and a characteristic bitter taste. The brewery's history reflects a century of operation, with periodic rebrandings and packaging updates. The introduction of dark beer in 2014 expanded the brand's range. The acquisition by Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Heineken in 1998 brought international corporate backing while maintaining the brand's local identity.
