The first San Miguel Brewery was founded in 1890 as La Fábrica de Cerveza San Miguel by Enrique María Barreto under a Spanish Royal Charter. Pedro Pablo Roxas soon joined as managing partner, bringing German brewmaster Ludwig Kiene as technical director. The business incorporated as San Miguel Brewery, Inc. in 1913 and was renamed San Miguel Corporation (SMC) in 1963, having grown into a major conglomerate. The breweries operated as SMC's beer division until 2007.

The present San Miguel Brewery, Inc. was incorporated on July 26, 2007, and the domestic beer business was spun off into it on October 1, 2007. In 2009, Kirin Holdings Co. Ltd. of Japan acquired 48.3% of SMBI from SMC. In 2010, SMBI acquired full ownership of San Miguel Brewing International Ltd, integrating its domestic and international operations. In 2017, SMC consolidated its beverage businesses into San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Inc., which acquired 51% of SMBI and was renamed San Miguel Food and Beverage, Inc.

The brewery's brands include San Miguel Pale Pilsen, San Miguel Premium All-Malt Beer, San Miguel Super Dry, San Mig Light, San Miguel Cerveza Negra, Red Horse Beer, Gold Eagle Beer, and Kirin Ichiban, among others. Non-alcoholic offerings include Magnolia Healthtea and San Mig Free 0.0. A historical marker was installed at the original brewery site in 1950, and another at the Mandaluyong headquarters in 2015.
