San Miguel Beer is the name given to San Miguel Pale Pilsen, a Filipino pale lager that serves as the flagship product of the San Miguel Brewery. The original brewery, La Fábrica de Cerveza San Miguel, was established in 1890 in San Miguel, Manila, by Enrique María Barreto under a Spanish Royal Charter that officially allowed beer production in the Philippines. Pedro Pablo Roxas soon joined Barreto as managing partner, bringing along German brewmaster Ludwig Kiene as technical director. In 1964, the company was renamed San Miguel Corporation, and the brewery was spun off in 2007 to become a subsidiary of San Miguel Food and Beverage.
San Miguel Pilsen is the top-selling beer in both the Philippines and Hong Kong. In Chinese-speaking markets, it is known as 生力啤酒 (Shēng lì píjiǔ). The beer entered Spain in 1946 through San Miguel Brewery, but the Spanish rights were separated in 1953, eventually forming what is now the Mahou-San Miguel Group.
The brand offers several varieties under the "San Miguel" name: San Miguel Pale Pilsen (5% ABV), San Miguel Premium All-Malt Beer (5% ABV), San Miguel Super Dry (5% ABV), San Miguel Flavored Beer (3% ABV), Cerveza Negra (San Miguel Dark Beer, 5% ABV), and Red Horse Beer (a strong beer at 6.9% ABV). Under the "San Mig" label, there is San Mig Light (5% ABV in the Philippines, 3.51% v/v in Indonesia), San Mig Strong Ice (6.3% ABV), and San Mig Zero (3% ABV, where "Zero" refers to zero sugar, not zero alcohol).
For its overseas expansion, San Miguel Brewery entered the Spanish market in 1953 by establishing a company that later became San Miguel Spain. Since 1946, a company called La Segarra had been producing malt for medicinal purposes. In the early 1950s, key shareholders Enrique Suárez Rezona, Ramón Vidal, and Jaime Muñiz contacted Andrés Soriano, then president of San Miguel Brewery, to allow their group to brew beer under the San Miguel name in Spain. The "Manila Agreement" was signed in 1953, creating La Segarra, S.A., which was renamed San Miguel Fabricas de Cerveza y Malta, S.A. in 1957 as an affiliate of San Miguel Brewery, Inc., which initially held a 20% equity share through its Hong Kong subsidiary. In February 2014, San Miguel Corporation and Mahou-San Miguel signed a cooperation agreement to jointly promote San Miguel Beer and expand its global presence.
