Crown of Thornz were formed in 1994 when Danny Diablo recruited Franklin Rhi, then bassist for 108. After auditioning five guitarists simultaneously, Diablo, Rhi, and drummer Marcos 'Jere' Rodriguez were unimpressed. Rhi called Mike Dijan, former guitarist of Breakdown, who came to the rehearsal space and began playing with them; the five auditionees put down their guitars and watched as the band wrote 'Mental Masquerade.' Diablo then told Dijan he was in the band, and they recruited Dimi Douvas of Dmize as permanent drummer. After two months with only two songs written, Diablo booked them to open for Killing Time at the Grant, prompting daily rehearsals during which they wrote the entire Train Yard Blues EP.

The band's name came from Diablo eating a thornback guitarfish in sushi; he wanted a name including 'thorns' and chose a play on Jesus' crown of thorns, finding it ironic due to his Jewish faith. Train Yard Blues was released in 1995 on Equal Vision Records, by which time Rhi had been replaced by Steve O'Brien. Mentally Vexed followed in 1996 on Another Planet Records. In 1998 they released a split single with Aggressive Dogs and disbanded by year's end. After reuniting in 2012, they toured the US supporting Rancid in 2013, performed at United Blood Festival 2015, and released the single 'Nothing But Tragedy' in 2015. They toured with Sick of It All and Agnostic Front in 2022, and performed at FYA Festival 9 in 2023. In 2024 they are scheduled to perform at Irving Plaza with Killing Time and Vision of Disorder to raise money for Sick of It All vocalist Lou Koller.

Rhi's solution was to phone Mike Dijan, a former guitarist from Breakdown, and invite him to the rehearsal space. The moment Dijan picked up his instrument and jammed alongside Rhi and Rodriguez, the five auditionees simply set their guitars aside and watched the three write what would become "Mental Masquerade." Diablo declared Dijan a member on the spot, then locked in Dimi Douvas of Dmize as the permanent drummer. The group rehearsed in Douvas's basement. Their post-reunion output has been equally restrained: the two-track single Nothing But Tragedy dropped on August 14, 2015, featuring Diablo on vocals, Matthew Mangiaracina on guitar, and Rigg Ross on drums. Influence and Life on the Road

Crown of Thornz's influence on the hardcore landscape extends well beyond their own recordings. Bands such as Higher Power, Never Ending Game, Regulate, and Trapped Under Ice have all cited them as a formative influence, and Joey Chiaramonte of Koyo has acknowledged their impact as well. Narrow Head even recorded a cover of one of their songs. After reuniting in 2012, the band threw themselves into touring. In June 2013 they supported Rancid across the United States alongside the Transplants. They played United Blood Festival in May 2015 and, in 2022, co-headlined a lengthy run supporting Sick of It All and Agnostic Front. Their 2023 schedule included FYA Festival 9, an opening slot for Trapped Under Ice in New York alongside Bulldoze and Pain of Truth, and a set at Tompkins Square Park with Madball and Murphy's Law. In November 2024 they performed at a benefit at Irving Plaza with Killing Time and Vision of Disorder, raising funds for Sick of It All vocalist Lou Koller's fight against esophageal cancer.
