Reader's Guide

Absolum represents a significant step for Dotemu as their first original property, moving beyond licensed revivals. Developed by Guard Crush Games, co-developers of Streets of Rage 4, and Supamonks, the game blends classic side-scrolling beat'em up gameplay with roguelike elements such as randomized Rituals (passive abilities), permadeath that resets equipped Rituals, and a hub realm for recovery and upgrades. The game also incorporates role-playing elements like side quests and diverging paths, and supports two-player cooperative multiplayer. Its release across multiple platforms, including a later Xbox Series X/S port in March 2026, and availability on Xbox Game Pass at launch, helped it sell over 200,000 copies in its first week. The game received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic, and its development was inspired by Golden Axe, Dead Cells, and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara.

Combat & Roguelike Design

Absolum fuses side-scrolling brawling with roguelike risk-and-reward loops. Players pick from four fighters, each with a unique weapon and movement style: Karl the dwarf brawls with guns and bare fists, Galandra the elf swings an enormous sword, Cider attacks in rapid bursts with twin daggers, and Brome, a frog-like wizard, glides through the air on his scepter. All characters share light and heavy attacks, and chaining hits builds mana that powers a high-damage special called an Arcana. Dodging or striking in the instant before an enemy's blow lands deflects the hit and stuns the opponent.

Each run opens with the player equipping Rituals—passive bonuses that reshape their attacks. Clearing encounters unlocks more Rituals, yet all of them are lost if your character dies. Level layouts remain fixed, but the player chooses which path to take, and the Rituals scattered in each level are randomized. A fallen player returns to a hub realm to heal, shop for upgrades, and unlock permanent items. Defeating bosses grants active combat skills called Inspirations, and the game layers in side quests and diverging paths. Two-player co-op lets friends fight through runs side by side.

The World of Talamh & Its Story

Set in the fantasy realm of Talamh, Absolum tells a story of tyranny and rebellion. The world is gripped by the Sun King Azra and his fanatical army, the Crimson Order. In opposition, the sorceress Uchawi assembles a resistance of four unlikely warriors: Galandra, an elven swordswoman; Karl, a dwarven brawler; Cider, a mysterious assassin whose limbs are mechanical; and Brome, a magic-wielding anthropomorphic frog. Together they march through Azra's forces all the way to his stronghold and put an end to his rule.

The narrative takes a sharp turn, however. Azra's true purpose was never conquest—it was to contain and control Absolum, a colossal interdimensional entity capable of annihilating Talamh entirely. The twist deepens when it is revealed that Uchawi is actually Azra's wife, and she is carrying his child. After she gives birth, the four warriors return to the palace one final time to face Absolum itself. The ancient being is ultimately subdued and carried away by three otherworldly creatures, leaving Talamh's fate uncertain.

Development & Studio Vision

Absolum marks a milestone for Dotemu, the publisher best known for breathing new life into classic beat'em up franchises. For the first time, the company greenlit an entirely original intellectual property rather than another licensed revival. The game was crafted by Guard Crush Games, which had previously co-developed Streets of Rage 4, alongside Supamonks, a French studio for which Absolum was its very first video game project. Supamonks handled all art and animation.

Both studios were deliberately interested in creating something new instead of resurrecting a dormant franchise, with the shared goal of introducing the beat'em up genre to players who had never tried it. To broaden the appeal, Guard Crush Games wove in roguelike mechanics—an experiment they had first explored in Mr. X Nightmare, a downloadable content pack for Streets of Rage 4. The team has cited Golden Axe, Dead Cells, and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara as key creative influences shaping the final product.

Launch, Platforms & Reception

Dotemu officially unveiled Absolum in March 2025, and the title hit shelves on October 9, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. Silver Lining Interactive followed up shortly after with physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The game is also available on Android and iOS, giving it a notably wide platform footprint. The Xbox Series X/S port arrived later, on March 25, 2026, and was available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at launch.

Critically, Absolum earned "generally favorable" scores on Metacritic, a solid showing for a new IP stepping into a genre dominated by established names. Commercially, the launch week proved strong, with over 200,000 copies sold—a notable figure for an original title from a publisher previously known for reviving other companies' franchises. The combination of a fresh roster, roguelike replayability, and co-op play appears to have resonated with both longtime brawler fans and newcomers alike.
