Umbra Witches

The witch clan of darkness that Bayonetta belongs to.

The Umbra Witches are a clan of witches in the Bayonetta games, followers of darkness. Five hundred years before the first game they and the Lumen Sages, followers of light, kept the balance between darkness and light, each holding one of the Eyes of the World.

Lore & Background

A clan war with the Lumen Sages and a great witch hunt by the angels of Paradiso nearly wiped them out, leaving Bayonetta and Jeanne as the only survivors. Bayonetta herself was born of a forbidden union between the Umbra Witch Rosa and the Lumen Sage Balder. Bayonetta Origins notes that every Umbra Witch's soul is eventually dragged into Inferno.
