Balder

Lumen Sage, Bayonetta's father, and the antagonist of the first game.

Balder is a Lumen Sage and the father of Bayonetta, born of his forbidden union with the Umbra Witch Rosa in Vigrid. In the first Bayonetta he is the last of the Lumen Sages: Bayonetta finds him at the top of a tower, where he reveals that he is her father and that he means to join the three realms again by bringing back Jubileus the Creator, the ruler of Paradiso.

Bayonetta 2 shows a younger Balder. As the Masked Lumen he is brought into the present by the Prophet with a promise of revenge and hunts the boy Loki, whom he blames for Rosa's death. Loki's power sends Bayonetta and Balder 500 years back to the Witch Hunts, where Bayonetta arrives too late to stop Loptr, Loki's double, from murdering Rosa. At the end Balder stops Loptr's soul from escaping and absorbs it, although Loki warns him that it will corrupt him. In the prequel Bayonetta Origins, the union with Rosa is the reason Balder was banished and Cereza exiled.
