Codename Eagle

A spiritual predecessor to Battlefield 1942.

Refraction Games created the first-person shooter Codename Eagle, which Take-Two Interactive and TalonSoft published. The game launched in the United Kingdom during November 1999 and reached North America in March 2000. After acquiring Refraction Games in 2000, DICE took over the in-development Battlefield 1942, making Codename Eagle its spiritual forerunner.

Plot

The game is set in an alternate timeline centered around events starting in Petrograd, Russia in 1917. World War I and the 1917 October Revolution never happened, and Germany has yet to become involved with any other world powers. The story begins when Tsar Nicholas of the Russian Empire is betrayed by his close friend General Popov, who sends assassins to kill the Tsar and the rest of the Royal Family to eliminate all heirs to the throne. Popov covers up the murders by telling the Russian people that a terrible accident befell the Royal Family, then presents Lieutenant Oleg as the sole surviving son of Tsar Nicholas, crowning him as the new Tsar under the name Prince Alexander.

Colonel Sergei of the Army Staff overhears Popov's plans and rescues the real Prince Alexander and Princess Anastasia, who was shot and left for dead but survived. Sergei arranges for Dr. Meier of the Russian Scientific Institute to hypnotize Prince Alexander, temporarily erasing his memory of his heritage and replacing it with that of a farm boy from the English countryside, to prevent him from revealing his true identity. With Oleg as a fake Tsar, Popov, bent on world domination, takes over almost all of Europe, throwing the continent into war.

The free nations form an alliance called Shadow Command to rebel against the Russian Empire. Ten years later, in 1927, Prince Alexander, with his temporary memory, has become Agent Red of Shadow Command, the only playable character. He is assigned the most difficult missions alongside friends Captain Potter, Agent Goggles, and Agent Mortar, with the goal of defeating the Russian war machine from within.
