Plot
In September 2027, NATO forces prepare to evacuate Georgia for a peaceful transfer to the private military company Pax Armata. U.S. Marine Raider Gunnery Sergeant Dylan Murphy and his squad Tempest 1-2 are ambushed by Pax forces. Murphy leads the squad to destroy critical cybersecurity installations, but their extraction helicopter is shot down. The squad is overrun in a last stand, leaving Murphy as the sole survivor. Over the next months, the NATO Secretary General is assassinated by Pax Armata, and twelve nations leave NATO to ally with Pax. Murphy is reassigned to squad Dagger 1–3 under CIA handler Melissa Mills. At city hall, they witness the capture and execution of a British squad leader by Pax field commander Alexander Kincaid, who escapes.
Development
Battlefield 6 was developed by DICE, Criterion Games, Motive Studio, and Ripple Effect Studios under the collective branding Battlefield Studios. Ridgeline Games was involved before its 2024 closure, focusing on the single-player campaign. DICE led multiplayer development; Motive and Criterion led the single-player campaign, with Motive also contributing to multiplayer map design. Ripple Effect Studios leads development of the battle royale mode.
After the negative response to Battlefield 2042, Vince Zampella was installed as overall head of Battlefield and oversaw development until his death in December 2025. Ars Technica reported in July 2025 that the game faced development challenges including team burnout, cultural clashes among studios, unrealistic sales expectations from EA, and a budget exceeding $400 million, making it one of the most expensive video games ever developed. EA CEO Andrew Wilson described it as an 'all-in as a company' effort.
EA launched Battlefield Labs, a closed-access worldwide playtest for feedback. Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 were cited as main inspirations, with a serious tone. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 influenced the Tactical Destruction system, with intentional limits on building destruction. Technical director Christian Buhl noted software optimization was needed for the Xbox Series S's memory limits.
The game was the first mainline entry since Battlefield 4 to include a linear narrative campaign, inspired by Lioness and Civil War.
Release and promotion
In February 2025, EA announced Battlefield Labs and released pre-alpha gameplay. Early footage leaked online by playtesters in March 2025. The title was leaked in July 2025 when EA sent packages to influencers featuring the logo. Battlefield 6 was officially revealed on July 22, 2025.
Two open beta periods were held in August 2025, with the first attracting over 500,000 concurrent players on Steam. Progression awarded items usable at launch. Following the beta, Battlefield 2042 received an update adding a new battle pass with items usable in Battlefield 6. The campaign trailer debuted at PlayStation's State of Play in September 2025, and a live-action trailer starring Zac Efron, Paddy Pimblett, Jimmy Butler, and Morgan Wallen was released on September 28, 2025.
The game launched on October 10, 2025. Shortly after launch, Windows players reported issues with the EA App requiring DLC purchase to play, and Steam users found the game unavailable to download. Battlefield Studios confirmed they were diagnosing the issue, offering affected players in-game bonuses; Phantom Edition buyers received access to the following season's battle pass. Vince Zampella called the situation 'honestly embarrassing'.
Post-launch updates take the form of seasonal updates with battle passes. In April 2026, Battlefield Studios disclosed a roadmap for Seasons 3, 4, and 5, releasing in May, July, and Fall 2026.
