Development, marketing and release
The development team cited accessibility and value as reasons for a digital-only release rather than a retail launch. At the Xbox Live Arcade release, server joining and statistic recording issues arose; DICE's Gordon Van Dyke and EA attributed this to higher-than-expected player volume exceeding server capacity. Additional servers were added, and Van Dyke noted problems with EA account access. Despite launch issues, after the first day players had accumulated 29.45 years of game time and over 5 million kills.
In 2011, DICE cancelled the planned Windows version to focus on Battlefield 3. At Sony's E3 2011 conference, Sony announced that a copy of Battlefield 1943 would be included on every PlayStation 3 disc of Battlefield 3, but it was not included upon release. EA later stated via Twitter that early access to Battlefield 3 expansions was provided instead, and ultimately honored the pre-order announcement. The game was delisted from digital storefronts on 28 April 2023, and its servers shut down on 8 December 2023.
