Madhur Canteen
Historic Dhaka University canteen tied to Bangladesh's political movements.
Madhur Canteen, known in Bengali as মধুর রেস্তোরা, is a well-known institution in both the history of Dhaka University and the national politics of Bangladesh, due to its deep ties with political movements that began on the campus. The building where it now stands is considered architecturally and historically significant. The canteen’s founder, Madhusudan Dey—commonly called Modhu—also holds an important place in the region’s socio-political history.
The canteen first opened in 1921, when Madhusudan Dey himself started the business on the Dhaka University campus, then located in what is now the Dhaka Medical College building. The canteen later moved when the university’s Arts Faculty relocated to a new building at Nilkhet.
Madhur Canteen was central to the Bangladesh Liberation Movement, serving as a gathering point for many political actions. It played a key role in the Language Movements of 1948 and 1952, the 1949 protest by fourth-class university employees, student revolts against the university’s black laws, and the 1969 mass uprising in East Pakistan. During these critical times, student leaders and activists regularly met there. On 25 March 1971, as Operation Searchlight began, the Pakistani army targeted the canteen.
Madhusudan Dey was killed on 26 March 1971. Early that morning, Pakistani soldiers stormed his house and opened fire. His wife, son, and daughter-in-law were among those killed. Dey himself was wounded in the shooting, arrested, and taken to the Jagannath Hall playground, where he was executed alongside many students.
After the Liberation War, Arun Kumar Dey took over running the canteen. The building had been severely damaged during the war and was later rebuilt, relocating from its original site to its current location.

Reader's Guide
Madhur Canteen holds significance as both a historic eatery and a symbol of political resistance in Bangladesh. Its origins date to 1921, when Madhusudan Dey's father began selling food on the Dhaka University campus. Over decades, the canteen became a gathering place for student leaders and activists, playing a central role in the Language Movements of 1948 and 1952, the 1949 employees' movement, protests against university black laws, and the 1969 mass uprising. The canteen's association with the Bangladesh Liberation Movement led to its targeting by the Pakistani army on 25 March 1971, during Operation Searchlight.
