Lore & Background

Malarkey joined the paratroopers in July 1942 after being rejected by the Marines due to dental issues and lacking math skills for the Air Corps. At Camp Toccoa, he was among the one in six enlisted men certified as paratroops. In June 1944, he parachuted into France for Mission Albany, part of Operation Neptune. During a pitched battle that same day, Malarkey helped knock out four German 105 mm howitzers at Brécourt Manor, an action earning him the Bronze Star. He fought for twenty-three days in Normandy, nearly eighty in the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden (where he was promoted to sergeant), and thirty-nine days in the Battle of Bastogne. His service continued through Haguenau and the Ruhr Pocket, covering nearly thirty more days.

Reader's Guide

Malarkey graduated from Astoria High School in 1939 and briefly attended the University of Oregon before the war. Post-war, he returned to complete his business degree in 1949 while joining the Sigma Nu fraternity. He married Irene Moor on June 19, 1948; they had four children: Michael, Martha, Sharon, and Marianne. After working as a sales manager and insurance agent, Malarkey was elected Clatsop County Commissioner in 1954. He remained active in public life until retiring from speaking events in 2012. In May 2011, he attended his last major public event with fellow soldier Lynn 'Buck' Compton before Compton's death in 2012. Following the death of Paul Rogers on March 16, 2015, Malarkey became the oldest surviving member of Easy Company until his own death from age-related causes on September 30, 2017.
