Background
Founded in 1784 as the successor to the Continental Army of 1775, it is the largest American military branch and is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Army and the military Chief of Staff of the Army, a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Its costliest conflict was the Civil War, with over 350,000 casualties. In World War II it formed five airborne divisions - the 11th, 13th, 17th, 82nd and 101st - and the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, raised at Camp Toccoa in 1942 and attached to the 101st in June 1943, whose volunteers earned their jump wings before they wore the Screaming Eagle patch.
