Background
Organised in the National Army at Camp Shelby in July 1918 and demobilised that December, it was reconstituted in the Organized Reserve in 1921 and reborn as an airborne division in August 1942, with the 82nd providing cadre for everything but its parachute infantry. In World War II it won its renown in Operation Overlord, where it dropped behind Utah Beach, protected the southern flank and took the lock on the Douve at La Barquette; in Market Garden and the liberation of the Netherlands; and in the Battle of the Bulge, reaching Bastogne by truck on 19 December 1944 and holding the encircled town's road junctions until Patton's Third Army broke through on 26 December. It later fought at Hamburger Hill and Fire Support Base Ripcord in Vietnam, became an airmobile division in 1968 and an air assault division in 1974, and is based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
