Background

Spielberg and Tom Hanks produced Band of Brothers (2001), a ten-part HBO miniseries based on Stephen E. Ambrose's book; it follows Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division's 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment and won a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries. The series was developed chiefly by Hanks and Erik Jendresen, while Spielberg served as "the final eye" and used Saving Private Ryan to inform the series. German historian and Holocaust researcher Anton Posset worked with Spielberg and Hanks as a consultant on the episode depicting the Kaufering camp, providing photographs of the liberators and documentation of the survivors' reports he had collected over the years.

The success of Band of Brothers led to two companion miniseries, also with Spielberg's and Hanks' involvement, The Pacific (2010) and Masters of the Air (2024), and executive producing Band of Brothers and The Pacific gained the pair Primetime Emmy Awards. Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, made his directorial debut with Duel (1971) and became a household name with Jaws (1975); he directed the historical war epics Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998), both of which won him the Academy Award for Best Director, with the former also earning him Best Picture. He co-founded Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Pictures and has received three Academy Awards.
