Plot
The campaign follows a party of adventurers investigating an ancient being known only by name. The story unfolds as a contest between two dragons vying for godhood. Players may choose a path of good or evil, each offering different quests, though the moral distinction is not always clear. The game consists of over thirty distinct battles or missions, several of which are mutually exclusive, so not all can be accessed in a single playthrough. Scenarios cannot be replayed once completed. A single lead character drives the narrative, with other adventurers in supporting roles. Before each scenario, players select up to five auxiliary characters to accompany the lead, for a total party of six. Only characters who participate in a battle earn experience, so maintaining a larger roster dilutes level gains.
Reception
Most reviewers gave Dungeons & Dragons Tactics negative reviews, citing numerous problems. The user interface was widely criticized as cumbersome; GameSpot noted that moving requires navigating multiple menu choices rather than a single button press. The camera, which remains heavily zoomed in, also drew frustration. IGN observed that players cannot pull the camera back far enough to see enemies on illuminated battlefields or in dark dungeons, making it hard to locate foes until they are close. On Metacritic, the game holds a score of 58 out of 100.
