Season 1 of Babylon 5, subtitled Signs and Portents, aired in 1994 and is set during 2258. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair, a hero of the Minbari war played by Michael O'Hare, is in charge of the station, assisted by executive officer Susan Ivanova and security chief Michael Garibaldi; Sinclair is troubled by his inability to remember the events of the war's last day. Stewart Copeland, who scored the pilot film, could not return, so Christopher Franke composed the music from the first season on.

J. Michael Straczynski deliberately went light on the five-year narrative in this season, feeling the audience was not ready for it, while still planting scenes that would matter later. O'Hare left after the season, which caused minor inconsistencies with later years, most visibly in "And the Sky Full of Stars" and "Babylon Squared". Julie Caitlin Brown played Na'Toth this season, and Andrea Thompson's Talia Winters joined as a Psi Corps telepath. Ratings dipped after the second week and fell during the season to a low of 3.4 in reruns.
