Omatikaya Clan

Defenders of Kelutral, the Omatikaya clan embodies the spiritual and physical resistance against exploitation on Pandora.

The Omatikaya are a specific clan of the Na'vi species who reside on Pandora, the natural satellite of the gas giant Polyphemus. They inhabit a massive tree known natively as "Kelutral," which humans refer to as "Hometree." This structure serves as the central home for the clan and is a vital component of their specific culture and identity. The Omatikaya share a spiritual connection with Pandora itself through Eywa, a god described as "The Great Mother" who hosts the memories of all beings on the moon. Their existence was fundamentally altered by the arrival of humanity from a future Earth, specifically the Resource Development Administration (RDA), which sought to exploit unobtainium beneath their territory.

Lore & Background

The Omatikaya live in a large tree called "Kelutral" by natives and "Hometree" by humans. This dwelling is significant to their culture and identity as a people. They are part of a larger group of Na'vi clans that includes the Anurai, Aranahe, Hulanta, Hyuticaya, Kame'tire, Kekukan, Li'ona, Mangkwan, Metkayina, Ni'awve, Olangi, Rey'tanu, Sarentu, Tawkami, Tayrangi, Tipani, Tla'lim, Tomac'ta, and Zeswa. Like all Na'vi on Pandora, they possess a neural queue (or "kuru") in their hair, allowing them to connect physically to Eywa at sacred locations such as the Tree of Souls.

This connection is described as being more advanced than the human brain. The clan's history took a violent turn when the RDA targeted their Hometree for destruction to access unobtainium, a superconductor worth millions per kilogram found beneath the surface. During this conflict, the protagonist Jake Sully bonded with a Great Leonopteryx after the tree's destruction, earning the title of Toruk Makto and rallying the clan.

Reader's Guide

To understand the Omatikaya, one must recognize their deep reliance on Hometree (Kelutral) as both shelter and cultural anchor. They are distinct from other Na'vi clans like the ocean-dwelling Metkayina who appeared in later films. The Omatikaya's primary conflict arises from the presence of unobtainium, a "thundering rock" or "lingtskxe" in Na'vi, which causes chunks of land to be ripped from the ground creating floating mountains. Their survival depends on their ability to connect with Eywa through the Tree of Souls using their hair's neural queue. Their resistance is driven by the RDA's plan to destroy Hometree in order to extract the unobtainium beneath it. After Hometree was destroyed, Jake Sully, initially an outsider, bonded with the Great Leonopteryx and, supported by Neytiri and the new chief Tsu'tey, united the clan.
