The Tulkun are highly intelligent whale-like creatures of Pandora's oceans, with language, emotions and spirituality of their own, and the Metkayina reef clan share a spiritual bond with them. They follow a vow of pacifism, and they become a target of the RDA because their brains produce amrita, a yellow substance that, extracted after a Tulkun's death, stops ageing in humans.
Lore & Background
In Avatar: The Way of Water, Lo'ak is saved from a shark-like predator by the Tulkun Payakan, who was exiled by the other Tulkun for attacking the humans who killed his mother. Quaritch commandeers a Tulkun-hunting ship and orders it to hunt near Na'vi villages to draw Jake Sully out; when the Metkayina learn of the killings, Lo'ak goes to warn Payakan.
