Humans come to Pandora, a moon of the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri A system, as the Resources Development Administration (RDA). Because the moon's atmosphere contains carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, humans cannot breathe it safely and must use breathing equipment or genetically engineered Na'vi bodies called avatars.
Lore & Background
In Avatar, set in 2154, humans working for the RDA, among them Jake Sully, use avatars to win over the Omatikaya and persuade them to leave Hometree, which the RDA plans to destroy to mine the unobtainium beneath it. In the later films humanity turns to hunting the Tulkun, whose brains produce amrita, a substance that stops ageing in humans.
