Format (2009 show)
The 2009 celebrity version used a heats and semi-finals format similar to MasterChef Goes Large, airing once a week for an hour. Celebrities were split into groups of three for a heat round with two challenges: an Invention Test, where they created their own dish, and a Pressure Test, where they replicated a professional chef's dish. Contestants received one "lifeline" allowing the chef to assist them for 90 seconds. The six semi-finalists then faced further challenges to reach the final.
Series synopsis
The first series of Celebrity MasterChef Australia started production in early September 2009 and ran for ten weeks from 30 September 2009. Host Sarah Wilson was not brought back; Network Ten said her role could not fit without major format changes. Judges Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris, and Matt Preston returned, with Calombaris and Mehigan handling presenting duties. Olympic swimmer Eamon Sullivan won, taking $50,000 for his charity Swim Survive Stay Alive. In February 2010, executive producer Mark Fennessy said he doubted a second series would happen. On 25 May 2021, a new edition was announced, airing later that year with judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong, and Jock Zonfrillo. Former AFL player Nick Riewoldt won the second series, earning $100,000 for charity Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision.
