The Nine Network commissioned the show, and its first season aired on 24 October 2007. Eight seasons ran from 2007 until 2012, when the network cancelled it. In May 2015, Nine announced a revival for a ninth season, hosted by Sam McClymont, which premiered on 1 February 2016. Nine then decided not to renew the series again.
In October 2019, reports emerged that the Seven Network had ordered a new season; on 23 October 2019, Seven officially confirmed the revival at their 2020 Upfronts. Natalie Gruzlewski announced in December 2019 that she would return as host. The tenth season began on 26 July 2020, and the title dropped the leading "The," matching the original British version. Seven renewed the series in August 2020 for a second season in 2021, the eleventh overall, with Gruzlewski again hosting.
That season started on 4 July 2021. In July 2021, Seven renewed it for a third season in 2022, the twelfth overall, which began on 4 September 2022, with Gruzlewski as host. Seven renewed it for a fourth season, the thirteenth overall, in October 2022. In February 2023, Sam Armytage was announced as co-host alongside Gruzlewski.
Seven renewed it for a fifth season, the fourteenth overall, in October 2023. The first promo, revealing the farmers, aired in February 2024, and the 2024 season was set for 14 April 2024. The fourteenth series was Armytage’s last as host, as she signed with Nine in October 2024. Gruzlewski will return as host in 2025.
The farmers and their dates were revealed in April 2025, along with the fifteenth season premiere date of 21 April 2025.
