Background

Its story spans the manga's first 50 chapters, the same stretch as the anime's first two seasons, seen mainly through an original custom character who fights beside the manga's cast. That character joins the 104th Cadet Corps as a child, determined to kill the Armored Titan that killed their parents when Wall Maria was breached. The final mission of the base game ends in an original way that is canon to neither manga nor anime, while the "Final Battle" DLC moves on to chapters 51 to 90, the third season's material.

Visually cel-shaded, the game pairs fast aerial combat with large open areas for bringing down Titans. Compared with the first title it adds a story mode that can be played start to finish in co-op and a character creator, and a "Daily Life" mode lets players bond with cast members such as Eren Yeager between missions. Work began soon after the first game shipped, with smarter AI and a stiffer challenge as priorities; Koei Tecmo collaborated closely with the manga's publisher Kodansha and with Isayama on new story elements, and a plan for the English cast to record lines was dropped for lack of time, as had happened with the first game. A demo was available in Japan from April 26, 2019, and worldwide from May 7 to July 31, 2019; the DLC followed on July 4, 2019, in Japan and a day later in North America and Europe.

Japanese first-week sales were 28,480 on PlayStation 4, third on the all-format chart, 22,941 on Switch and 15,621 on Vita. The National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers nominated it for Sound Editing in a Game Cinema, and a sequel, Attack on Titan 3, was announced in June 2026.
